The Making Hour .11

What a week. I seem to be saying this each week but I needed The Making Hour this week, a little bit of creative exercise. This week I decided to make a simple book from a collage I had been experimenting with. Here is the finished result.

I’ve popped together a simple step by step of what I did incase you want to have a go too. First off I started with an A3 sketch that I wasn’t too keen on.

1. Fold the paper in half the long way then reopen

2. Fold in half the short way then reopen

3. Take the outer shortest edges of the paper and fold into the middle then reopen - you will have 8 sections on the paper now

4. Fold in half again and cut along the middle to the fold line as shown above

This bits fiddly so it might take a few goes.

5. Sit the paper up folded slightly long ways on a flat surface and open the cut section so it looks like a diamond shape

6. Squeesh the diamond shape closed so the paper looks like a cross when you look down at it

7. Then start to fold the cross closed into a book shape; you can fold it in any way so think about what you want as the front cover and back cover

8. To make it really crisp and sit nicely use a hard item like a bone folder, ruler or handles on scissors to flatten the edge.

Done!

I liked how this made the image that I wasn’t too keen on into eight interesting sketches that I could work into. I popped it into the back of my notebook so I could further work into it whenever I feel like it, a little creative retreat in my bag.
