The Making Hour .10

We’ve been doing a lot of kids crafts over the past weeks but it’s also been great to take some time out to myself. To do some making just for fun. I’ve been doing a lot more stitching and though I have a big sewing case I wanted something smaller to carry from room to room when doing my embroidery. So my first sewing task was making a little wrap case to carry a couple of needles, embroidery thread and scissors.

To start off, I made a really simple pattern to work from. This was a great chance to use up some offcut fabric too! I had some grey boiled wool which I thought would be great as I wouldn’t have to worry about finishing the edges, I could just cut it and it won’t fray.

I made different sized pockets to put all the different bits and bobs in. Even a little loop of fabric for needles to get pinned in too. I also sewed over the edge of the pockets at the top to make them a bit stronger. This was just a quick fun project for me so I didn’t worry too much about getting perfect lines when sewing.

Adding on a bit of ribbon I had stashed away years ago created a lux knot to close. I liked the case but it was a bit big and flimsy - after thinking about it I’m going to put an outer fabric, maybe in cotton to make the case more solid.

I still had some boiled wool leftover and a smaller offcut of wax cotton so decided to make another smaller one. This one worked better as it was more rigid than the first one but I don’t think that was because it was smaller, I think it was just because it had an outer fabric.

This problem-solving element of making is something I absolutely love but you need to have the time to make mistakes and experiment. Often I get these making hours at night-time and its the way I relax. After making these little cases I got my embroidery out, a cup of tea and some good rubbish on tv. Bliss!
